Just in to warm up for a minute then back out to the barn.
I got home Wednesday night from Illinois doctor. Friday morning I was alerted to the following.
Early yesterday morning a friend called and said my neighbors had had a fire in the night. It is a resort that is over 100 years old located about 800 feet down the hill from me. Everyone got out safely but three floors were involved.
Flames were coming out of the attic window when the chief got there a little after 4:30AM. He lives just a stones throw from the resort. They brought more firefighters in from the mainland in addition to our large volunteer crew, according to the radio. I do not know if they ran a special boat or if they came on the first one to relive our crew.
Our VFD department had, just a few months ago, bought their first ladder truck. That truck was the only reason they got the fire under control so quickly. Within 30 seconds, according to the chief's interview on the radio, they were able to drop 400 gallons of water in through the blown attic window from that truck.
Also, few years ago a large reservoir (about swimming pool size) was dug 'up town' to hold emergency fire water. Here the pumpers go either to that reservoir or to the lake to pump fire fighting water.Found this article, about the fire, online today
