• Hi, all! I have a question....I've had this pretty large flower frog for years, and I always believed it was Weller Coppertone (I used to deal in a lot of the old Weller Muskota, Coppertone and Woodcraft) - loved the frogs, especially figurals. Wish I'd kept some of them now, wow on the prices. I haven't even seen any of it out here in years. The frog is red clay so it could be Weller, but maybe also Peters & Reed.....anyone? I don't have my big Weller book here so can't verify. I am pretty sure Fulper didn't use this color glaze (though teh frog certainly could be one of theirs - but red clay, so probably not). Let me know if any of you have thoughts on this???? Thanks in advance.

  • Oh! Gordon, isn't this the little dog you were teaching to dance a couple years ago? For God's sake, don't let him suffer on like this, yes it is hard to let go, but all of us who love our animals have done that time and again. A worse thing, by far is to allow them to linger on in pain when we need to take them to a vet and hold them as they drift off to sleep and to a better place. You'll be reunited again on the other side of the rainbow bridge. I've had a couple of my animals die here at home because I was too unwilling to see how sick they were, hoping they might "get better, miraculously". They didn't, and the guilt was enormous. Please do the right thing for Nice. (Yes, before everyone jumps on me, it may not be my business either, but everyone else has had input and if Gordon posts pictures like that and discusses the ailments Nice is suffering from, then he should be prepared for our responses. That being said, my sympathies to both of you.)

  • Hi, just cruising in to see what's what in the world of pottery...no new acquisitions to report? Gayle, so glad to hear your Lassie came home as well. My cats roam outside and into neighbors' yards a little, and two of them do cross the street, which I hate, but you can't stop them - still I worry if I call and they hide until THEY are ready to come in. Happening more and more as the wx improves. And not to be the spelling police or anything, but Amber, per say is really per se. I'm not much into things metafizzikal but appreciate them who is.

It's approaching that well-known day in May: (nope, not mother's day) so here is my take on it: http://i46.tinypic.com/ve5i0i.jpg

    HAPPY SINKO de MIAOW, everyone.

  • That's funny - - to think of photoshopping a picture to hide one's age (but doctoring a license plate instead of doing a face lift!!) Lessee - that would make me about 112, right? I feel that way as it is!

  • Gordo, you can count that high on your fingers?

  • Yup that's me...with the flask!! Rotgut Rosie, they called me.

  • Char, did you really? What fun! Bet YOU never had to stand in line for anything, right??? lol

    Gracious R Us

Gordon, nobody can understand why anyone would keep issuing invitations to people who presumably are already reading this chat. If they want to jump in, they will. It would be better to go out there in ebay land and tout the virtues of this chat board for those who don't know it exists. That's all.....Maybe now the message will be clear?

  • We were really serious about trying to meet you part way with the cat, too - - we had cabin fever about as badly as we do right now! But it would have been crazy for both households to drive 8 or 900 miles (I forgot what the half way point was) at $4 a gallon for gas back then. She is happy, though, it seems. However, Nate stopped by the house one day to tell me that she'd had (ahem) kittens. Got out, she did, and Snidley Whiplash or one of the neighborhood toms was waiting. I didn't ask to see them. I ain't as dumb as I look either. lol I love the orange cats - I've had a lot of them and I swear they are the sweetest natured cats of any other color. I know, coloration should have nothing to do with disposition but - I may have had about 15 over the years, and that's my story!

  • Ummm, a black chiffon mopcap? Badda boom!

    Seriously, a cloche? Maybe?

Yup, Liz, you have it down. Always let the guy make the BIG DECISION. That's how we got 3 of ours. Remember the pretty mackeral strip orange female I found over a year ago? And then found a home for? She is living a block away from us now - the guy and his wife reconciled and all are living just down the street. I've seen "Goldie" a couple of times in the yard here, but she doesn't seem to remember me at all! Ingrate. lol

  • Susan, I've rescued lots of kittens over the years and I feel as strongly as you about trying to place TWO together. They seem happier when they have company and they're sure no more work than one bored cat!! Amber: I'm sure Bob knows Dewey is missing his friend, but right now belaboring the point only serves to make Bob feel worse. I think when the time is right - as has happened time and again to me and other animal lovers/rescuers - another cat who needs a loving home will come into Bob and Dewey's lives; I've always said it's amazing how it happens, and it nearly always does.

  • Gordon, remember a wonderful filly in this country called Ruffian? Sounds like they're setting up Black Caviar for a bad outcome, whether she's fit to run or not. I hate that aspect of racing. Hope the owner isn't consumed by greed and will consider his horse.

  • I don't think tying the chats into ebay is probably desirable. No need to do that anyway, but maybe some announcement in Community would be the ticket. John said that the platform (don't ask, I don't know) upon which liveworld chats was operating was too expensive to keep running and would have required some new formatting to be compatible with their new "systems" so they dumped the chats. i'll take a look at Community when I get a minute and see if that might work. It is rather a shame and it could only be helpful to ebay to have advisers out here in the ether who've been at it awhile and can remove some of the fears newbies have. Heck, I have fears! Ebay tinkers constantly and not always successfully. And it's more complicated than ever before. You hit the nail on the head, Gordon, about the small sellers being the life blood of ebay early on - - a subject I harped on with John (he called me a couple times, as well as a few others who had written him with concerns) - and while he knew what I said was true, he is only one guy who is powerless to change the direction in which ebay is travelling. An Amazon wannabee. He didn't respond when I said that ebay would just as soon get rid of the little guys altogether; we knew it, but for now most of us do stay.

  • Shelly, I asked John Bodine that question about the book board and I do believe he said he had no problem with steering people to the new chats (these) but I am not sure how to do that. Perhaps in our listings would be the only way? But that won't really attract newbies in any number. I told him we were all concerned about that, since most of us had some help from more experienced people when we started seliing on ebay. If anyone can think of a way to let people looking at ebay know that there are chats that moved off-site but which have the same basic membership roster as the old ebay chat boards, let me know, and I would get back in touch with John and see if there couldn't be a blanket statement about all these new (thanks, Curt!) chat rooms and where to find the one speaking to your collecting interest.

  • Hi, Irene. Am I right in thinking that single shakers in depression or whatever are collectible? I have a nice deco looking milk glass shaker but it's missing its lid, alas. It's a pepper shakes. Then another pepper shaker from Tipps, with lid. Another Salt, with boats and a lid. (Those are all the "range type, square) A Hazel Atlas Green with metal lid - and a white with green stripe around the top, metal lid, depression glass of some kind. Think I should lot them all up?

  • Nancy, the fact that it's a jadite shaker trumps the fact that the letters are worn. Jadite is still hot. I'm thinking of listing a jadite pepper shaker with a kind of banged-up lid but have been hesitating. She ought to get decent money for it.

  • The pickings are slim here in the West - but I still find a piece or two sometimes. Last year at a WY auction in a flat full of carved wooden elephants, there sat an 8" long Van Briggle elephant figurine. I was terrified that some ham-handed browser would break it before they got to it - but luckily I stood guard and managed to win the lot pretty cheap - maybe $22 or so. The elephant is worth well over $100 so I was happy! It's what we live for. Sometimes people here don't know anything beyond Roseville or maybe Hull or McCoy so things occasionally show up and don't sell for much. I've found Weller and older Brush-McCoy a few times just sitting there unnoticed. I think once before the old ebay pottery board shut down I was able to ID something someone had - it was a terrific little orange Coors Rosebud Pottery pitcher with lid. It is nice to know and be able to share it! I don't remember who had that piece but I was thinking about asking if she intended to sell it.

Oh! While I'm thinking about it - I have a beautiful platter in the Metlox Green Rooster pattern (Calif. Provincial). Got it at an auction with a few other pieces - it's 16" long and in perfect shape would be worth around $200 - but there's a shallow half-inch chip on the back edge. Do you know anyone who does repairs anywhere? I've lost touch since I moved from NYC and don't know a soul out here who does that kind of work. I might be able to do a "for display only" repair but don't know if anyone would want it. Still, I can't just throw it away. It's so nice. Here's the pattern - (in a soupbowl)

  • Isn't this supposed to be a board where lovers of pottery can identify their finds and share their knowledge with one another? How in the world did it become a "toxic foods I have met" forum? I used to be a pottery dealer and still love the stuff - but I haven't been seeing very much about the subject of late. When this all simmers down, I have a couple pieces I would like to photograph to see if anyone has a clue about possible maker. It'll keep for now; I'm trying to clear the decks of some Fire King at the moment.

  • Sorry, bad code. I erased the other post. Try this one!

Dang. Was on my way to lunch with the girls. Met this guy who gave me a business card, which I took and passed around when I got to the restaurant. Some fool took a pic of us!

  • Wes, with the kind of wind you get in no dak, WHY would you bother? They'll be in the next state soon.... lol

  • Shelly - They seem to be our biggest collectors of FK or the opaque glass that "might" be FK; ya gotta love the japanese collectors. You know of the cobblestone mtn site for fk mugs, right? Yes, I see we're talking glass when this is the (ahem) pottery site. I used to specialize in american art pottery when I lived on the east coast. I sure miss all the beautiful stuff now. In WY there isn't much around! My sister bought quite a bit from me to keep it from going to shows, and she stuck it away in storage in CA. I found a piece of Hull butterfly at an estate sale awhile back (I think that's what it is - - I never liked Hull much -- but aside from some obscure Weller, not much turns up even at auctions. I did find a Van Briggle elephant about 9" long at an auction - a great piece - and I sold it on ebay; however his trunk snapped in shipping somehow and I now have him back. You can barely tell and I will probably repair it and maybe just keep him, though he was a pretty pricey figurine. Surprised there isn't more VB around here - I have come up with 3 pieces of Broadmoor Pottery (Denver, 1930s) and a little Coors but that's about it.

  • I also meant to mention that there has been talk of a big time seller of fire king mugs who buys up plain ones and has decals put on them, offering them as legit. I have seen his listings (can't recall the name right now) but beware....

  • Hi all. I looked at the site with the FK and most of his offerings seem to be marked (while some of the new repro stuff is not). I imagine there are areas where it's possible to get ahold of FK - - not everyone is "aware" of it (though the yard salers sure seem to be! I saw a couple d handle mugs in white awhile back marked $5 each! I picked up 8 pink "coca cola" shaped mugs a couple of months ago at about $2 each. I still accumulate mugs until I get a couple dozen and then list - but have had two bad experiences within just a matter of weeks with those airline companies that buy here in the states and ship to Japan. (flttohnd, etc.). All are based in Carson CA and there are several diffrerent ones, but they ALL have the same woman in the basement of the building doing inspections as packages arrive. I don't like it, but color me distrustful...
