• Dan – I am usually on the Bookboard chat but came over here to read what’s what. I have read with dismay what has happened to you and I want to give you some suggestions.

I was a union representative as well as the State of Minnesota president of American Federation of Government Employees (fed employees). I would assume you are not union being such a small unit within a city government?

In our federal union agreement, we had a rule that an employees personnel file was the be reviewed once a year and non-essential materials purged from said file and returned to employee. I would suggest you check your rules and see if such a thing applies to you, and if so, ask for that email be returned to you (the actual email and not a photo of it) That way you know it still cannot be used against you in the future, incase something else upsets her and she throws the kitchen sink at you.

If she did not return it to you today, ask her for it’s return since you both have ”talked about it”. If she does not or will not return it to you then you possibly have a problem in the future.

If you have no such rule about purging a personnel file, then I would suggest you sit down and recall on paper everything that was said today, especially about the email, and sign and date the paper and then stick it in an envelope and seal it and date it.

You need to do this inorder to protect yourself if it ever comes up again. In discussing it today, it can constitute part of disciplinary action for possible termination and/or could affect future unemployment benefits.

I hope she does return it to you and that’s the end of it.
